Year One
Welcome
A warm welcome to Year One at St Chad’s Primary School!
All About Us!
Year One is a wonderful year group; we really enjoy working as a team! Mrs Lloyd teaches the class on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Mrs Wassell teaches the class on a Thursday and Friday. We also have Mrs Hillman, our Teaching Assistant who is with us each morning. Here is a bit more about us:
Mrs Wassell
Hello! I am Mrs Wassell and you’ll find me in Year One on Thursdays and Fridays. Having taught at this wonderful school for nearly 10 years, I have developed a deep passion for working in Key Stage One. Mrs Lloyd and I make a great team and have worked together for a few years. Each year is an exciting new journey and we are committed to creating a nursing and inspiring environment where every child feels valued, safe and supported.
My favourite subject is Maths! I was lucky enough to take part in a NCETM Maths Mastery programme which led to a complete redevelopment into our approach to teaching Maths. I love how everyone sees things differently and love exploring different methods and practises.
Outside the classroom, I love spending time with my family. I enjoy walking my lovely dog, discovering new playgrounds with my little one, and finding the perfect spot for a good coffee (and cake of course).
Mrs Lloyd
I love teaching Year One with my background being in Early Years and Key Stage One. I am very fortunate to work as part of a fantastic team with Mrs Wassell and Mrs Hillman here at St Chads. We aim to create a wonderful, warm environment in Year One for our children so that they are able to live life to the full and flourish into who they were made to be.
I love teaching this year group and we learn through play; having lots of fun each day. We also love our stories and each day, every child has the opportunity to vote for their preferred story from a choice of two (great) books! I love seeing the children’s excitement of finding out which story has won! We explore the outdoors and our forest area as often as we can (in all types of weather!). The children never cease to amaze me as they discover something new every time.
Outside of school, I love being with my family and try to get outdoors as often as I can. I enjoy baking, reading and painting. I am also trying to learn the guitar this year, so watch this space!!
Please take a moment to read what we will be learning this year. If you have any questions, we are always happy to chat things through. Please feel free to ask us on the gate or drop us an email or phone call.

Our Curriculum Overview
What are we learning about this half term?
Homework
Daily:
Reading –
To support children’s reading fluency and phonic knowledge, we ask for children to read for a minimum of 5 minutes per day. We ask families to record any reading in your child’s reading record. We understand our families are busy, therefore we ask for a a quick date and a ‘Read with Grandma’ or book title would be great.
Weekly:
Maths – A maths challenge will be set each week based upon our current focus in class. This will be set weekly on Showbie. This will go out on a Thursday and be due in the following Tuesday.
Across the Curriculum – Homework from across the wider curriculum will be set weekly on Showbie. This will go out on a Thursday and be due in the following Tuesday. For more creative projects, we will specify a longer deadline.
Phonics Support
We teach phonics through Read, Write, Inc (RWI).
Over the year, we will send links via RWI to help support your child with their phonics and reading.
